The Remains of Transient Folks is my contribution to Residue, a joint exhibition at Baan Saen Saep. The work begins with the things people leave behind in Bangkok: cigarette butts, plastic bags, bottles and food wrappers. I approached these discarded objects as traces of human presence, holding the memory of someone who has already moved on.
Walking through the city, I photographed litter where I found it and imagined the bodies and gestures that might have placed it there. White silhouettes and painted interventions bring these absent figures back into the photographs. The work asks us to reconsider what we overlook, and the lasting marks of our brief encounters with a place.
The two diptychs below show the photographs before the live painting performance. The exhibition images document how the work changed through that encounter.
